BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's golfer Graeme McDowell (Portrush, Northern Ireland) is one of 10 amateur players to make the Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) Walker Cup team, tournament officials announced earlier this week.
The Walker Cup is similar the PGA Tour's Ryder Cup, but is played only by amateurs.
McDowell is coming off an excellent season in which he was named to the PING All-American Second-Team, a first for any UAB golfer. He finished tied for 16th at the NCAA Championship May 30-June 2 at Duke University, shooting rounds of 75-68-74-70=287 to finish 11 strokes back of medalist Nick Gilliam of Florida. McDowell captured two tournament wins in 2001, including the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invite (72-68-72=212) and the Atlanta Intercollegiate (64-69-71=204) for the second consecutive time. McDowell had eight top-ten finishes this season and completed the year with a 71.3 stroke average.
The Great Britain and Ireland team will be defending the Cup it won in the 1999 matches played at the Nairn Golf Club in Nairn, Scotland.
The 2001 Walker Cup Matches will be held Aug. 10-12 at the Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga.
