Florida Captures 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championship

DURHAM, N.C. - Florida shot a final round 275 to win the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championship Saturday at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham, N.C. This is the fourth championship for the Gators, who shot rounds of 296-278-277-275 to finish at 26-under par 1,126. Florida's fourth round of 275 was the lowest round of the tournament by any team.
In their first NCAA Championship, the Blazers finished tied for 12th place a firing a final round 292. Over four rounds, the Blazers shot 297-289-300-292 for a 1,187 tournament total.
"I am very happy for the team," said head coach Alan Kaufman. "We have made a tremendous movement up the ladder of college golf and I can't wait for next year to start with all the same players coming back."
UAB's Graeme McDowell was the top-finisher for the Blazers tied for 16th place. McDowell fired a final round 2-under par 70 for a 287 total. "I didn't really play as good as I could have this week, but I am just really excited for the team to have made it this far," said McDowell. "We put in a good performance this year and showed everyone that we were good enough to compete. We didn't play our best this week, but we are still up there with the best fifteen teams in the nation."
Daniel Ozley, Payton Osborn and Craig Gordon all fired a 2-over par 74 during the last round of the championship. Ozley finished the tournament tied for 46th place with 294 while Osborn finished tied for 63rd place with 300. Gordon finished one shot back of Osborn with 301, putting him in a tie for 66th place while teammate Drew Jones shot a final round 79 to finish 82nd with 309.
The individual title went to Florida senior Nick Gilliam, who shot 12-under par 276 for the tournament. Gilliam and Arizona's Ricky Barnes were tied at the conclusion of the third round, but Gilliam fired a final round 1-under par 71 to take the championship while Barnes finished tied for eighth after a final round 79. Camilo Benedetti of Florida and Jamie Elson of Augusta State finished in a tie for second place with 279.
Clemson finished the championship in second place with 1,144, one shot ahead of first and second round leader Arizona who finished with 1,145. Georgia Tech finished in fourth place with 1,148 followed by, 5. Georgia (1,152), 6. Arizona State (1,162), 7. Augusta State (1,164), 8. Virginia Tech (1,165), 9. East Tennessee State (1,167), 10. Wake Forest (1,168), 11. Pacific (1,177), T12. Oklahoma (1,179), T12. Oregon State (1,179), T12. UAB (1,179) and 15. SMU (1190).
