BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB baseball players Blake Allen and Rob Caputo, who were taken in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month, have signed to continue their careers on the professional level.
Allen, a 35th-round selection by the Anaheim Angels, has been assigned with the Provo (Utah) Angels of the Rookie-level Pioneer League. The Alexander City, Ala., native and right-handed pitcher played only his senior season this spring with the Blazers and tallied a 4-6 record with four saves and a 3.05 earned run average in 30 relief appearances.
As for Caputo, the 18th-round pick by the Montreal Expos, he will begin his professional career in the Short Season Class A New York-Penn League for the Vermont Expos (Winooski, Vt.). The right-handed pitcher from New Fairfield, Conn., completed his junior and only season for UAB in 2001 with 2-6 with a 6.80 earned run average.
