BIRMINGHAM - Pinch hitter Cory Acklus delivered a two-run double in a three-run seventh to propel UAB to a 4-2 comeback victory at Samford here Wednesday night played at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Blazers (23-24) snapped their season-long five game losing streak with the victory, while Samford (16-31) had a two-game win string snapped.
Down 1-0 in the seventh, UAB took the lead for good in the seventh.
Mark Garner started the go-ahead inning with a single followed by a walk to pinch hitter Nick Clark. A sacrifice bunt by Christian Reimers moved the runners up a base, before Acklus hit a ball that skipped over the first baseman and into rightfield to allow both Garner and Clark to score. After a strikeout, Mitch Jones delivered his second single of the night that plated Acklus.
UAB starter Scott Gibson (3-2) tossed seven-plus innings and allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts to earn the victory. Jon Burgett pitched a solid 1 1/3 before turning the ball over to Joe McRae with one out in the ninth. McRae gave up a single before tallying a strikeout and groundout to earn his first save of the campaign.
Samford took its early lead with a solo home run by Heath Owen in the second - his fourth of the year - and then added its other run in the eighth on a RBI single by Joe Denson.
Bulldog starter Charlie Crabbe (2-3) went six-plus frames and limited UAB to two runs on five hits and four walks, while fanning six Blazers to suffer the loss.
UAB returns to action this weekend when they play host to Louisville in a three-game Conference USA series. Game one of the series is slated for 7 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
