Men's Golf Advances To NCAA Championship

WILLIAMSBURG, NC - The UAB men's golf team finished in sole possession of ninth place at the NCAA East Regional with an 855 total, advancing them to the NCAA Championship at Duke University May 30-June 2 in Durham, NC.
This tournament defined the words "team effort" for the Blazers. During the first round of play, Drew Jones led the team with a 2-under par 70, while Graeme McDowell added to the score with a 1-under par 71 for UAB. Payton Osborn and Daniel Ozley came on strong in the second round, both firing a 4-under par 68. During the third and final round, McDowell shot a 2-under par 70 to lead the team, while Craig Gordon finished with an even par 72 to clutch ninth place by one stroke for the Blazers.
This is the first time in UAB history the men's golf team will compete in the NCAA Championship. "I am happy for my players that have worked so hard to get to this level of competition and excel," said head coach Alan Kaufman. "To see them put it together when it mattered most was a great thrill. We are equally looking forward to our trip to Duke and we believe we can hold our own against the nation's best."
East Tennessee State ran away with the team title finishing at 828, eight strokes ahead of North Carolina State who finished second at 836. Florida finished third with 837, while Clemson finished fourth with 842. Duke filled out the 10th and final spot after defeating Ole Miss in a playoff.
In the individual category, Camilo Villegas of Florida held on to his two-day lead to clinch the championship with a final 15-under par 201. Top-ranked Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech shot a final round 67 to move into second place, just two shots behind Villegas at 203. Chris Mundorf of NC State and Chris Wisler of ETSU finished in a tie for third with a 204 total.
The Blazers were one of 10 teams from the East Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship. Ten teams from the west and central regional events will also advance to the championships as well as the top two individuals from each region who are not members of the teams advancing.
