HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Phillip Winningham highlighted a four-run eighth inning with a go-ahead sacrifice fly to lead Southern Mississippi to an 8-6 victory over UAB in Conference USA play Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
With the win, the Eagles (25-30 overall, 11-16 in C-USA) swept the Blazers in the three-game set as UAB ended its season at 25-30 and 6-21.
After falling behind 2-0, UAB jumped out to a 4-2 win with four runs in the fourth inning. The Blazers got a two-run single by Mark Garner and followed with a RBI fielder's choice by Matt Gaulden. Keith Barnes then squeezed in the final run with his league-leading 13th sacrifice bunt.
After the Eagles cut the advantage to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame, Garner added a run-scoring single in the fifth. For the day, Garner was one of three Blazers with a pair of hits as he also drove in three runs. Seniors Lee Jolly and Christian Reimers also added a pair of safeties in both their final games as Blazers.
UAB led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth but the Eagles wasted no time in retaking the lead. USM saw its first five batters reach base in the inning and got runs on a single by Ben Mosley, a bases loaded hit batsman and a steal of home in the pivotal frame.
Charlie Rogers, the final of four USM pitchers, got the win by allowing an unearned run over three innings on a hit and walk with two strikeouts. Rogers improved his record to 3-3.
Blake Allen (4-6) gave up three runs in a third of an inning with a walk and hit batsman to suffer the loss.
