NEW ORLEANS - Matt Groff delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to score James Jurries and lead Tulane to a 4-3 Conference USA baseball victory here Sunday afternoon.
The Green Wave (39-8 overall, 16-5 in C-USA) won all three of their games over the Blazers (22-23, 5-16) in their final at bat and achieved that feat 11 times this season.
Joey Charon (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings down the stretch and limited the Blazers to just one hit, while striking out three in earning the victory. UAB's Jon Burgett, the third Blazer pitcher of the afternoon, got tagged with the loss as he came in to start the 10th and allowed a pair of hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 0-2.
The Green Wave got on the board first with a pair of runs in the first. After getting the leadoff batter to groundout, the Wave had four straight batters reach base with a walk and three consecutive singles. The last two by Jurries and Michael Aubrey drove in a run.
Tulane extended the lead to 3-0 in the third. After an error allowed John Kaplan to reach base, the Wave followed with a walk, a stolen base and then an RBI groundout by Jurries.
UAB cut into the advantage with a run in the sixth. Brandon Holmes led off the frame and stole both second and third before Cory Acklus drove in him in on a groundout.
Brandon Holmes tied the score in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer to leftfield as it was his second round-tripper of the campaign.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday when they play host to Auburn in a 7 p.m. contest at Young Memorial Field.
