Baseball Falls in Series Finale To Charlotte 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Pat Gambale limited UAB to five hits over 8 2/3 innings and lifted Charlotte to a 5-2 Conference USA baseball victory over the Blazers here Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The 49ers (13-13 overall, 5-4 in C-USA) captured the series by winning two of three games.
Gambale (2-4) allowed two runs and two walks, while fanning six in the contest. The righthander compiled eight shutout innings, retiring 11 Blazers in a row at one point, and fanned the first two batters in the ninth before getting into some trouble.
UAB (16-12, 3-6) delivered consecutive hits, a single by Chris George and a double by Brandon Isbell, before Mark Garner tallied a single to center that plated both Blazer runs. The big hit for Garner was his second on the day.
Jacob Chaney came on to record the game's final out on the next batter to earn his second save in as many days and his fourth on the campaign.
Charlotte scored single runs in the second, fifth and eighth innings, before getting a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. George Sandel, who run-scoring single in the fifth, added his second RBI one-base safety in the ninth before a sacrifice fly Brad Erwin to complete the 49ers' scoring.
Brian Bowman, who had three hits for Charlotte, knocked in the game's first run in the second with a single and the 49ers other run came off a fielding error in the eighth.
UAB starter Ross Dobbins (3-3) suffered the loss for the Blazers as he threw seven-plus innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday when they take on Mississippi State in a 6:30 p.m. contest in Starkville.
