Baseball Falls At South Florida 5-1 Sunday

TAMPA, Fla. - Jon Uhl pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings to help propel South Florida to a 5-1 Conference USA baseball victory over UAB here Sunday at Red McEwen as the Bulls completed the three-game sweep of the Blazers.
Uhl (2-3) limited the visitors to four hits and two walks while fanning six in earning the victory. Shannon Royal came on to throw 1 1/3 scoreless innings before David Richtberg hurled the ninth and surrendered the only run to UAB in the contest.
In UAB's half of the ninth, Mark Garner doubled with one out to notch his third hit of the afternoon. Garner scored one batter later on a single to right by Cory Acklus. The Blazers would get another run on base with a fielding error but Richtberg shut the door with a striekout and groundout to end the game.
The Bulls (14-14 overall, 5-1 in C-USA) manufactured its first two runs of the game by plating them via an RBI groundout by Rick Stegbauer and on a fielder's choice by Jeremy Earle in the second.
Daniel Boyd increased the USF lead in the fifth to 4-0 with a two-run single and the Bulls finished their scoring an inning later with a solo home run to left by Mike Barclay. The homer for Barclay was his third of the campaign.
UAB (14-10, 2-4) lost for a season-high fourth straight time and stranded nine baserunners in the tilt. The Blazers left the bases loaded in both the fifth and seventh innings but did not muster any runs in those frames.
Blazer starter Rob Caputo (1-2) hurled five innings and allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout to suffer the loss.
UAB returns home for the first of four home games Tuesday when they play host to Jacksonville State in a single contest. Game time is 7 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
