UAB Advances To WNIT Third Round

UAB, 20-10 will play at New Mexico, Wednesday night at 8 p.m. CST. Alabama finishes its season 19-12.
Jackson, the Conference USA Player of the Year, led four UAB players in double figures. Shaquetta Rhodes and Natasha Thomas both recorded double-doubles. Rhodes scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds. Thomas scored 14 points and led the Lady Blazers with 13 rebounds. Mia Thrash scored 11 points. UAB outrebounded Alabama 41-26.
Beth Vice led Alabama with 14 points. Shun Hunter scored 13 and LaNisha Cartwell added 10.
The Lady Blazers made 14 straight free throws in 2:30 of the game to turn a close game into a double-digit final margin.
It was a back and forth game until those final minutes. UAB led the entire first half with the largest lead being eight points. Alabama battled back to cut the score to 36-35 at the half.
The Crimson Tide took its first lead at 44-43 with 15:45 remaining in the game. Alabama built its biggest lead at 46-43. UAB answered with four straight points to go back ahead at 47-46.
That was pretty much the way it went the remainder of the half. There were nine lead changes and 10 ties in the final 17 minutes of the game.
UAB went ahead for good with 2:30 remaining, 67-66 on a pair of free throws by Thrash with 2:30 remaining. That started a 12-0 streak by the Lady Blazers. Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 1:52 remaining to make the score 69-66.
Alabama had shots rim out three straight trips down the court and UAB got the rebound each time and converted free throws on the other end.
It was the ninth time this season Jackson, who has been named to four different All-America teams, has gone over the 30-point mark.
