BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Saint Louis catcher Andrew Slania's RBI double in the top of the sixth inning drove in the go-ahead run and starting pitcher Dan Shouse worked a complete game as the Billikens held off UAB for a 4-2 Conference USA victory Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, Billiken first baseman Ben Caffey was hit by a pitch from UAB reliever Jeremy Hudson, advanced to second base on a groundout by third baseman Brandon Shockley, and scored as Slania drove a Hudson pitch to left center field.
Saint Louis (9-8, 1-1 C-USA) added two insurance runs in the eighth inning as left fielder Curt Evans singled to left field with two out and the bases loaded scoring Caffey.?? UAB left fielder Mitch Jones misplayed the ball, allowing Slania to score from second, making the score 4-1.
UAB (13-6, 1-1), which had scored one run in the bottom of the first inning as Jones led off with a home run to left field, attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth.??
Right fielder Eric Lyon doubled to left field with two outs and scored on a single by catcher Al Hecklinski.? Shouse then struck out Blazer designated hitter Nick Clark looking to end the game.
Shouse (2-1) went nine complete innings for the win, allowing two runs on six hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts.?
UAB starter Joe McRae went five complete innings, allowing one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts before giving way to Hudson (0-1), who worked two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
