UAB Baseball Defeats Eastern Illinois 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Keith Barnes and Chris George drove in runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to give UAB the lead and reliever Blake Allen allowed only one hit in two and one-third innings as UAB rallied to win game one of a double-header with Eastern Illinois 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Eastern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by right fielder Ben Duke that scored designated hitter Bret Pignatiello.??
UAB responded with a run in the bottom of the second as designated hitter Brandon Isbell scored on a squeeze play as shortstop Mark Garner delivered a sacrifice bunt.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, center fielder Christian Reimers led off with a walk and advanced to third on the next play, as left fielder Mitch Jones singled.? Barnes then pushed a pinch-hit bunt single past EIU relief pitcher Jason Pinnell, scoring Reimers to give UAB the lead.? George then slapped a single down the left field line to score Jones, making the score 3-1.
Allen (2-1) worked two and one-third innings for the victory, walking one batter and striking out two.??
Eastern Illinois starter Scott Metz (1-1) took the loss, working four complete innings and allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
