Southern Illinois Defeats Blazer Baseball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Southern Illinois broke open a 2-1 game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning -- aided by three UAB errors -- ?and held on for a 6-1 victory at Young Memorial Field Sunday afternoon.
The Salukis (2-4) took the three-game weekend series two games to one over the Blazers (2-2).? UAB won Friday's game 11-7 (the game was suspended when severe weather hit in the eighth inning and was completed Saturday) and Southern Illinois held on for an 8-7 win in Saturday's 15-inning battle.
UAB scored its only run of the day in the first inning as right fielder Mitch Jones led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout by left fielder Cory Acklus, and scored on first baseman Chris George's RBI single.??
Southern Illinois came right back to take a 2-1 in the top of the second inning.? Right fielder Sal Frisella tripled with one out and scored on the next play as left fielder Justin Maurath grounded out to shortstop.? Second baseman Dane Kerley reached on an infield single and the next batter, shortstop Ryan Murray, drove Kerley home with a double.?
After two scoreless innings, Maurath led off the Saluki fifth inning with a single, and moved to third on an error by UAB right fielder Jones.? Kerley then reached on an error by third baseman Keith Barnes, and Maurath scored.? Two batters later, Kerley scored on a single by third baseman Luke Nelson, and two more runs would come in on a single by designated hitter Roman Schooley, again aided by a Jones error in right field.
Southern Illinois starter Josh Latimer (1-0) worked worked seven and two thirds innings to earn the victory, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Blazer starter Scott Gibson (0-1) worked five complete innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with one walk (the only one of the day by three UAB pitchers) and two strikeouts.
