BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Carol Smith had 19 points, Lakeisha Johnson had 12 and Le'Coe Willingham added 11 points to lift Auburn (7-0) past UAB (4-2) 62-57 in women's basketball action this evening at Bartow Arena.
Auburn ended UAB's four-game winning streak by claiming its seventh straight victory. The Tigers also stopped UAB's nine-game home winning streak. The Blazers had not lost a home contest since Jan. 21.
Deanna Jackson hit a three-pointer to cut Auburn's lead to two at 59-57 with 12 seconds remaining to play. K'Shaki Short then fouled Smith and sent her to the line for two shots. Smith missed the first, but hit the second to give Auburn a 60-57 advantage.
The Blazers brought the ball down the court to try and tie the score, but called timeout without any remaining and were assessed a technical foul with two seconds left.
Behind 11 first half points from Smith, Auburn shot 48.1 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line to lead UAB 32-29 at the half.
Auburn shot 44.7 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from three point range and held UAB to 20 percent shooting from three-point territory for the game.
"This game was very disappointing," said UAB Head Coach Jeannie Milling. "We thought we were the better team, but that just was not so tonight. We played poorly and did not focus on the game. I feel like the team was not ready and I take credit for that. I think that Mississippi State made us over confident. We did not execute correctly. It was disappointing because we can play much better than we did."
Jackson recorded her fourth straight double-double in as many games with 18 points and 19 rebounds. Michelle Smith was the only other Blazer in double figures with 10 points and nine rebounds.
UAB next travels to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Gazette Hawkeye Classic Friday-Saturday. Friday, UAB will take on Kent State and Saturday the Blazers will meet either Texas-Pan American or Iowa.
