The UAB men's soccer team looks for its best regular season record ever when it takes on East Carolina, Friday afternoon in Greenville, N.C. at 11 a.m. CST.
The Blazers are 13-3 and 7-2 in Conference USA. They are ranked as high as No. 13 in various polls. A win would make UAB 14-3 for the season. The previous best regular season mark was 14-3-1 in 1995. The Blazers were 13-3-1 in 1994.
With a win the Blazers would also clinch a bye in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. The top six teams advance to the tournament with the top two teams earning first-round byes. A win would guarantee UAB no worse than a second place finish with South Florida. The Blazers beat USF earlier in the season to win the tiebreaker. South Florida hosts the Conference Tournament, Nov. 15-18 in Tampa, Fla.
East Carolina is 6-1 overall and 2-7 in its first year in Conference USA. Six of the losses are by one goal. The Pirates lost to Cincinnati 2-1. Cincinnati earlier defeated UAB 3-2 in Cincinnati.
The Blazers are second in the conference in goals allowed per game, allowing just 0.81 a contest. The Blazers goalkeeper Clint Baumstark, who has missed the last two games due to injury, is on pace to set the school record for goals against average at 0.63. He has also tied the school record for shutouts in a season with eight.
The Blazers are also second in goals scored per game with 2.19 a contest.
