TAMPA, Fla. - Freshman midfielder Jenny Rynders (Marietta, Ga.) scored two goals as the UAB women's soccer team (10-8, 7-3 C-USA) defeated South Florida (4-13-2, 1-8-1 C-USA) 3-1 in their final game of the 2001 season. The win was the Blazers third straight as they head into the conference tournament next week.
The Blazers registered nine shots in the first half, with the tandem of Rynders and freshman defender Briana McCarty (Lawrenceville, Ga.) connecting off a corner kick at the 19th minute, to give UAB their 1-0 half time lead.
The Bulls played well early on despite not recording a shot until the waning moments of the first period. USF was able to hold UAB to one goal, as Breck Bankester, USF's keeper, established herself early, making five saves.
The Blazers struck early in the second half, when senior forward Denise Peters (Jacksonville, Ala.) tallied her team leading eighth goal at the 48:22 mark, making the score 2-0. Freshman forward Tara Kidwell (Leesburg, Va.) and junior midfielder Cindy Penaranda (Huntsville, Ala.) garnered the assists.
The Bulls would battle back with a goal of their own at the 63:38 mark, when a Stine Hagh broke away from the defenders, and found a streaking Rachel Thjomoe who looped the ball over a diving Lisa Nowoslawski (Melbourne, Fla.) , UAB's keeper.
Rynders and McCarty connected on another corner to finish the Bulls off at the 73:05 mark, 3-1.
Nowoslawski was pulled from the game for the Blazers to give back up keeper, Janet Lemke (Marietta, Ga.), some playing time with 9:27 to go in the game. Nowoslawski tallied two saves on the night, and improved her record to 10-8.
With the season at its end, UAB will look ahead to next week's C-USA tournament. Seeds will be announced Monday after all regular season games come to an end.
