Volleyball Falls To Southern Miss 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a match for the final spot at the Conference USA Tournament next week in Houston, Texas, Southern Miss (9-18, 4-12 C-USA) used a .314 team hitting percentage to edge UAB (12-17, 3-13 C-USA) 3-0 in C-USA volleyball action at Bartow Arena.
In a tightly contested first game, Southern Miss used a .387 hitting percentage and held UAB to a .162 percentage to take a 30-23 victory.
The same scenario held in game two with the Golden Eagles hitting .333 and UAB being held to .128. With Southern Miss leading 21-19, the Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run to pull away and take the game 30-21.
Southern MIss got out to a 13-3 lead in game three, but UAB battled back to within two before Southern Miss closed the door and won 30-27.
Senior outside hitter Shelly Greene had 11 kills and six digs to lead UAB. Sophomore outside hitter Martina Shields posted 10 kills and nine digs and freshman setter Jessica Liptak added 37 assists for the Blazers.
Senior middle blocker Kelly Tribble led Southern Miss with 10 kills, a .476 hitting percentage, 11 digs and five total blocks. Freshman outside hitter Lisa Downey added 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage and junior setter Crystal Zane posted 39 assists for the Golden Eagles.
