Legion Field, Birmingham, Ala.
(Records: UAB 5-4, 4-2 C-USA, TCU 4-5, 2-3 C-USA)
UAB wins its third straight game (and third straight C-USA game) after
three straight losses in midseason.
?The Blazers held TCU to 20 net rushing yards, that's eight times in nine
games this season that UAB has held its opponent to less than 100 net
rushing yards (the Blazers have also held opposing individual rushers under
100 yards for 22 straight games, dating back to the 1999 season).
?The 38 points is UAB1s third-highest total of the 2001 season. UAB
averaged 37.0 points per game in five home games this season.
Speaking of home, the Blazers finished the 2001 home schedule with a 4-1
record. UAB is 42-17-1 in 11 seasons at Legion Field (1991- ), 22-10 in the
school's Division I-A era (1996- ), and 5-5 vs. C-USA opponents (including
a non-league loss to Cincinnati in 1996).
?With his seven-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, UAB running back
Jegil Dugger now has 13 career rushing touchdowns, tying him for second
all-time at UAB (with QB Daniel Dixon) and tying him for first in the
Blazers' Division I-A era (also with Dixon).
Quarterback Thomas Cox's 52-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White in the
third quarter is the longest of the 2001 season for the Blazers (actually,
the longest completion scoring or not). It was the second touchdown
reception of the year for White, a true freshman from Charleston, S.C.
Cox also connected with Willie Quinnie for a 23-yard touchdown pass in the
second
quarter, that was the Blazers' first score via the air in 10 quarters,
dating back to the third quarter of the Cincinnati game at Legion Field
(Oct. 13, Jeff Aaron 24-yards to Roddy White).
?Cox established a new career passing yardage mark with 223 yards,
eclipsing his previous personal best 122 yards vs. East Carolina in 1999.
?Cox is now 5-0 as a starter at quarterback for the Blazers (dating back to
the 1999 season) and 3-0 this season.
The 223 passing yards is both a team and individual superlative for the
2001 Blazers.
?The two touchdown passes for Cox give him his first multi-TD pass game of
his collegiate career. He had thrown one scoring pass vs. East Carolina
(1999) and vs. Montana State earlier this season.
Nick Hayes' 50-yard field goal in the third quarter is a new career long
and a new UAB Division I-A era record. Hayes held the Blazers' previous I-A
era record, 48 yards, which came two weeks ago at Memphis. The UAB all-time
field goal mark is 52 yards, set by Kevin Thomason vs. Mississippi Valley
State in a I-AA game in 1993.
Dio Hill's interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was his
second of the season and his first score as a Blazer. The last time UAB
returned an interception for a touchdown was at Army last season (Wes Foss,
72 yards, 11/18/00).
UAB closes out its 2001 Conference USA schedule at Houston next Saturday
(Nov. 17), kickoff is set for 7:00 pm CST.
