Flavio Monteiro stole the ball off a goal kick and scored in the 74th minute to lift No. 8 ranked UAB to a 2-1 win over No. 13 Furman in men's college soccer Sunday afternoon at UAB's West Campus Field.
It was the sixth straight win for the Blazers, now 10-1 on the year. Furman fell to 9-2.
Monteiro scored the goal at the 73:18 mark, just one minute after entering the contest. He earlier entered the game for the first time at the 22:47 mark and assisted Rogerio Oliveira on the Blazers first goal at the 23:33 mark.
Oliveira got the goal inside the left post from Monteiro's cross pass from the right side. That gave UAB a 1-0 halftime lead.
Furman's Matt Goldsmith scored on a shot from 15 yards out at the 53:03 mark. Sergei Radd had an assist on the goal.
The Blazers used a strong second half to outshoot the Paladins 12-8. UAB had eight shots in the second half to five for Furman.
UAB has now won all six of its home matches this season and has not lost at West Campus Field since the NCAA Tournament in 1999. Furman was the last team to beat UAB in a regular season match at home, in Sept. of '99. The Blazers have not lost at home in their last 21 straight regular season home matches, going 19-0-2.
The Blazers host Memphis, Wednesday night, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.
