All-America candidate Deanna Jackson and Natasha Thomas each recorded a double-double in combining for 37 points and 20 rebounds as UAB (12-6, 4-3) defeated South Florida (3-15, 0-7) 66-47 in women's Conference USA Basketball action, Friday night.
Jackson finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. It is the junior's 14th double-double of the season. Thomas, a freshman, scored 17 points and also had 10 rebounds in getting her second double-double. Thomas made 8-of-10 shots from the field.
The win broke a four-game road losing streak for the Lady Blazers. It was also the first C-USA road win of the season in three tries.
UAB dominated the game from the outset. The Lady Blazers shot 63 percent from the field in the first half and held South Florida to just 24 percent shooting in taking a 32-17 halftime lead.
South Florida scored the first six points of the second half, cutting the lead to nine at 32-23 with 17:05 remaining. However, UAB held the Bulls scoreless for nearly six minutes, scoring 11 straight points and took a 43-23 lead with 11:45 left in the game.
UAB built as much as a 26-point lead at 58-32 with 6:13 remaining before emptying the bench.
The Lady Blazers finished the game shooting 58 percent from the field. South Florida did shooting 57 percent in the second half and finished the game, hitting 39 percent. UAB outrebounded USF 33-22.
Mia Thrash added 12 points for the Lady Blazers. Aiya Shepard was the only South Florida player in double figures with 18 points.
UAB travels to face Houston, the National Division co-leader, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
