UAB Women Capture Conference Opener 78-51 over Memphis

Deanna Jackson got UAB off to a good start in Conference USA play, scoring 35 points and getting 13 rebounds as the Lady Blazers pounded Memphis 78-51 in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon.
UAB (9-3, 1-1) won its fourth straight, while breaking a 12-game losing streak to Memphis (7-5, 0-1). Prior to Sunday the last UAB win was in 1994 when the Lady Blazers swept all three meetings. Last year the Lady Tigers won 65-64 in Birmingham and 66-58 in Memphis.
Shaquetta Rhodes scored a career-high 20 points. Sally Jeter had a career high with 11 assists, despite not attempting a shot.
For Jackson it equaled her second best scoring effort of her career and the season. She scored 38 against Middle Tennessee and 35 against Florida A&M. It was the most she has scored in a C-USA game. It was also her 11th double-double this season. Over the last three games, Jackson has averaged 34 points.
Jackson is now averaging 29.4 points and 13.5 rebounds. She is second nationally in both categories.
The score was tied at two, but that was the last time it was even close. UAB scored the next nine points and led 11-23. After a Memphis basket they scored the Lady Blazers scored 14 straight and led by 21 at 25-4 with 10:28 remaining in the half.
Memphis cut the lead to 16, but never got closer. UAB led 45-16 at the half and led by as much as 37, 64-27 with 13:30 left in the game.
The Lady Blazers shot 59 percent from the field in the first half to just 27 percent for Memphis. UAB finished the game shooting 48 percent and Memphis 32 percent. Memphis did outrebound UAB 43-38.
Tiffany Adkins was the bright spot for the Lady Tigers scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
UAB hosts Marquette, Friday night, Jan. 5, at 7:00 in Bartow Arena.
