UTEP Defeats UAB Women's Soccer in Nike Classic

UTEP got first half goals from Laura Glasspoole and Kelly Parker to lift the Miners to a 2-1 victory over the homestanding UAB Blazers Sunday afternoon in the final round of the UAB Nike Classic at West Campus Field.
Later in the day, Auburn (5-1-0) got two goals from tournament most valuable player Tammy Waine in a 3-1 victory over No. 23 Marquette(4-1-0) as the Tigers claimed the tournament championship.
Glasspoole got her goal in the 12th minute for the Miners (1-4-0) and Parker added her score in the 20th minute to pace UTEP, but UAB chipped into the advantage in the 79th minute on a breakaway by Melissa Sherrell to cut the gap.
Both Sherrell and Cindy Penaranda were named to the All-Tournament team for UAB, while joining Waine from Auburn were Adriene Prosch, Ginger Sellick and Erin Hinson. UTEP's Parker and Glasspoole each got All-Tournament nods, as well as Marquette's Heather O'Neil, Rhegan Hyypio and Jill Vendetti.
The Blazers (1-4-1) return to action Friday in a Conference USA match at South Florida. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
