Men's Tennis Player Andre van der Merwe Posts Two Upsets At ITA Region III Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore Andre van der Merwe of the UAB men's tennis team won his third and fourth round matches on Friday to advance to the round of 16 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Region III Championships. In his first match of the day, van der Merwe pulled off the upset defeating the #31 ranked Georges Matjesevic of Auburn in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. He then defeated the # 39 ranked Paul Podbury of Tennessee after Podbury withdrew due to cramps in the third set of the match.
On Thursday morning, van der Merwe won his first two matches easily by defeating Todd Killen of Centenary 6-2, 6-0 and Andy Crews of Tennessee 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Tom Dalby fell to Matt Behrmann of Florida 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of play after receiving a bye in the first round.
In doubles action, Dalby and van der Merwe fell to Connor Casey and Kristopher Stahlberg of Ole Miss 8-3 in the second round of play.
Play will continue on Saturday morning starting at 10:00 a.m.
