UAB FOOTBALL: NOTES FROM THE ARMY GAME
11/18/2000 12:00:00 AM | Football
Nov. 18, 2000
UAB scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game (a one-yard run by Cory Conley)...that's the first touchdown on an opening drive for the Blazers this season.
Safety Avery Warner blocked a punt for the second straight game when he got a piece of Cadet Dan McElroy's kick early in the second quarter...last week vs. Southern Miss, Warner blocked a punt in the Golden Eagle end zone that was recovered for a touchdown by Percy Coleman... the blocked punt vs. Army was Warner's third career blocked punt.
Defensive end Bryan Thomas blocked another Army punt later in the second quarter....that's Thomas' third blocked kick of the 2000 season -- his first punt -- the other two were field goal attempts (vs. Chattanooga and Memphis).
The Army game marked the first time the Blazers have blocked two punts in a game since the Missouri game in 1999 and the first time ever that UAB has blocked two punts in the same quarter.
Both UAB and Army had a player named Josh Holden in Saturday's game. UAB's Josh Holden is a senior tight end from Florence, Ala., while the Cadet Josh Holden is a sophomore wide receiver from Hudson, Ohio.
Junior quarterback Jeff Aaron went over 1,000 passing yards for the 2000 season early in the third quarter....he also reached the 1,000-yard mark as a starter for the year in the third quarter (the Army game is his sixth start of the season) ... Aaron finished the game with a career-best 218 yards on 14-of-28 passes and a touchdown.
Junior split end Leron Little caught his second touchdown pass of the 2000 season and his UAB career in the third quarter, a 67-yarder from Jeff Aaron...Little''s other touchdown was a 24-yarder from Daniel Dixon at LSU (Sep. 23).
The 67-yard touchdown pass to Little was the longest to date for Aaron as a UAB Blazer....it was also the longest completion of the 2000 season -- scoring or not -- for the Blazers (the previous was a 65--yard non-scoring connection from Daniel Dixon to Willie Quinnie vs. Chattanooga on Sep. 7).
Safety Wes Foss' interception and 72-yard return for a touchdown was his third pick of the season and his first career return for a score....Foss now has seven career interceptions, tying him for fifth all-time at UAB with former Blazer safety Izell Reese (now of the Dallas Cowboys)
Foss' interception return for a touchdown was UAB's first since the East Carolina game in 1999 (a 91-yarder by Rodregis Brooks)...the touchdown was the second of the season for the UAB defense, Avery Warner returned a Cincinnati fumble 21 yards for a touchdown on Nov. 4.
UAB finished the 2000 regular season with a 1-2 record on artificial turf (losses at Kansas and Cincinnati and a win at Army).
UAB is now10-0 in regular season finales, dating back to the program's inception in 1991.
