Men's Tennis Defeated in First Round of Singles Play at Southern Collegiate Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - The UAB men's tennis team began singles play this morning in the Southern Collegiate Championships at the University of Georgia. The four-day event features four flights of singles play and three doubles flights.
In division I, junior Andre Van Der Merwe defeated James Moeckel of Furman 6-4, 6-2 in the first round before he was defeated 6-5. 6-4 by Daniel Kiernan of LSU in the second round. Senior Tom Dalby fell 6-3, 6-3 to Gilberto Alvarez of Georgia Perimeter and junior Alex Jung fell 6-4, 6-5 to Alex Bose of Duke.
In division II, freshman Niklas Lindstrom fell 6-4, 6-4 to Fernando Damus of Georgia State.
In division III, sophomore Alan Ambrose received a bye in the first round, but fell 6-3, 6-3 to Chuck Haddox of Samford in round two. Sophomore Rusty Walker fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Nicolas Laverde of Bethune-Cookman.
Doubles play will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. ET.
