After Tennessee, he accepted a position at Mercer University as the Student Support Services Coordinator and later went on to serve at Georgia Tech as the Assistant Dean of Students.
He returned to Tennessee as the Academic Coordinator for Football and at different points from 2003-11 worked with women’s tennis, baseball and men’s and women’s track and field. He also oversaw the RAC (Renewing Academic Commitment) Program which assisted former student-athletes in all sports returning to finish their college degree.
In 2011, he became the Associate Director of Donor Services in Athletic Development at Tennessee, and in 2013 was promoted to Director of Internal Operations. During this time, Carlson was part of a staff that established record numbers in fundraising and saw several new athletic facilities funded and built.
