Ty Margenthaler was named an assistant women’s basketball coach on April 9, 2025. The 2025-26 campaign marks his first season on staff at UAB.
Margenthaler brings over 20 years of coaching experience to Birmingham, including four seasons as a head coach. He comes to UAB after previously spending one season at North Alabama as an assistant coach. He helped guide a UNA player to Third Team All-ASUN, two Player of the Weeks and two Newcomer of the Weeks.
Before his time with the Lions, Margenthaler spent a season at Pittsburgh where he served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator and worked closely with the post players. During his lone season with the Panthers, he helped guide forward Liatu King to All-ACC First Team, ACC Most Improved Player and ACC Player of the Week during the 2023-24 season.
He spent the 2022-23 campaign at South Dakota as the assistant coach where he helped sophomore point guard Grace Larkins earn First Team All-Summit League honors as she became the first player in league history to rank in the top five in points (17.5 ppg), rebounds (8.0 rpg), assists (4.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).
Prior to South Dakota, Margenthaler spent six seasons at Saint Louis including his last four years as the associate head coach. The Billikens made three WNIT appearances during that span and reached the WNIT Elite Eight in 2021. Saint Louis marked his second stint with head coach Lisa Stone, following five seasons on her staff at Wisconsin. During their time in Madison, the Badgers were the 2007 WNIT Runner-Up, set a program record of 23 wins and made the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
In between those two stops, he spent four seasons (2011-2015) as the head coach at SEMO. Margenthaler helped rebuild the program that was coming off back-to-back 21-loss seasons when he took over. In 2013-14, Southeast averaged 63.4 points per game, which was a 10-point per game increase from when Margenthaler took over.
Other assistant coaching stops for Margenthaler includes Samford, Bradley and SIUE. He served as the recruiting coordinator at each stop. He has coached a pair of A-10 Players of the Year, seven All-Big 10 selections and one USA Basketball selection.
Margenthaler comes from an experienced basketball family. His father, Jack, coached men’s basketball for 15 seasons at Western Illinois and 11 years at SIUE before retiring. His brother, Matt, has been the Minnesota State’s head men’s basketball coach since 2001.
After collecting All-State honors as a senior at Macomb High School and playing two years at Indian Hills Community College (Iowa), Margenthaler spent his final two season of his career under the tutelage of his father at SIUE. He averaged 16.0 points and started in every game for the Cougars.
Margenthaler graduated from SIUE with a bachelor’s degree in physical education/kinesiology in 1997.
Margenthaler and his wife, Julie, have two sons, Brice and Nate.
