Miyah Barnes enters her second season as the UAB women’s basketball assistant coach for the 2025-26 season. Barnes spent four seasons in the Green in Gold from 2016-20.
For Barnes’ first season with UAB as an assistant coach, she helped guide Sara Bershers and Jade Weathersby to be named AAC Honorable Mention, along with Weathersby who earned a spot on the AAC All-Conference Second Team.
For the 2024-25 campaign she helped guide the team to rank nationally in defensive rebounds per game (25th – 28.2), 3-point field goals per game (26th – 8.4) and blocks per game (31st – 4.4). The Blazers also ranked in the top five in eight categories in the American Athletic Conference, which includes 3-point field goals per game (1st – 8.4), blocks per game (1st – 4.4), defensive rebounds per game (3rd – 28.2), assists per game (3rd – 14.3), free throw percentage (3rd – 72.8), field goal percentage (3rd – 41.4), 3-point field goal percentage (3rd – 33.2) and points per game (5th – 67.0).
Barnes began her collegiate career at UAB for the 2016-17 season where she appeared in all 30 games and made a freshman-high 27 starts. During her freshman season she was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week twice and netted doubles figures 10 times throughout the season. Barnes finished the season with 30 triples made which was the 11th most by a UAB freshman in program history. She also helped the team set the program record for 3-point field goal percentage (37.3) and finished second in school history in made 3-point field goals (218).
The Memphis, Tennessee native was named to the 2017 C-USA All-Freshman Team and earned a spot on the Maggie Dixion Classic All-Tournament Team. During the season Barnes made Sports Center Top 10 and the No. 4 top play after netting a half-court shot in her debut. The No. 4 spot was the highest by a women’s basketball team in C-USA.
As a sophomore, Barnes started in all 34 games and helped guide the team to 27 total wins and 13 wins in conference play, both program records. Barnes was instrumental in earning the program’s first ever C-USA Regular Season Championship and was a member of the squad to play in postseason since 2010-11. Throughout the season Barnes dished out 164 assists (4.4 per game) which ranked fourth most in a single season in program history. Her 4.4 assists per game ranked third in C-USA.
Barnes aided in the Blazers finishing the year ranked 15th in the NCAA in assists per game (17.2) and ninth in assists/turnover ratio (1.4). She played in integral role in helping break the school record for most assist in a single game (34) and shot 36.8 percent from the long range which was third-best on the team. Barnes also helped break more records by guided the team to setting the 3-point field goal percentage (37.6) and 3-point field goals (267) program record. For her efforts throughout the season, Barnes was named Second Team All-Conference USA.
In Barnes’ junior season she saw action in 33 games and was one of four players to start in all 33 games. She ranked fifth with the most assists (158) in a single season and ranked third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.9 points per game. Barnes led UAB in assists 19 times and paced the Green and Gold in scoring 10 times, finishing the season with 18 10-plus point games and four games with 20 or more points. The 5-5 guard finished the year ranked sixth nationally in assists-to-turnover ratio (3.5) and first in C-USA in assists and assists per game (4.8). Barnes helped UAB set the program record for 3-pointers in a season (291), 3-point field goals attempted (811), the third best field goal percentage from long range (35.9 percent) and fifth best free throw percentage (72.0).
After the 2018-19 season, Barnes was named Second Team All-Conference and represented UAB on the Conference USA Tournament All-Tournament team in postseason play.
In Barnes’ senior season she was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watchlist and became the 30th member of UAB’s 1,000-point club after recording her 1000th-career point in the Preseason WNIT. During the season she was named C-USA Co-Player of the Week after recording a career-best 25 points. Barnes earned another career milestone with her 500th career assists and became one of just three Blazers with 1,000 points and 500 assists. She moved into second place in UAB history in assists and set career highs points (389), points per game (12.5), free throws made (95), free throw percentage (86.4%), rebounds (106), rebounds per game (3.4) and blocks (2). She was named Second Team All-Conference USA for her efforts throughout the season.
Barnes finished her senior season with a list of accomplishments including, 1,380 points and 319 rebounds, tied for first in UAB history in games played (128), second in UAB history in minutes played (4,150), third in UAB history in career free throw percentage (80.6), was top 10 in C-USA history in career assists and top 10 in UAB history in threes made (160).
Academically, Barnes was named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll three times (2016-17, 2017-18 and 2019-20).
After Barnes’ college career she played overseas professional basketball in Cyprus and Germany from September 2019 to February 2020.
From August 2023 to February 2024, Barnes was the assistant coach at St. Georges Independent School in Memphis, Tennessee. She also runs Barnes Development to assists players in development of skills and professionalism. Barnes held her own youth basketball camp in October 2023.
