- Assistant Coach
Head Coach Ryan Ashburn has named former Birmingham Southern head coach Richard Schmidt as her new assistant coach for the UAB women’s golf program on Oct. 5, 2020.
Schmidt makes the move to UAB after serving as head coach at Birmingham Southern for both the men’s and women’s golf programs since 2016.
“The chance to stay in Birmingham and coach at the Division I level at a great university such as UAB was too good to pass up,” Schmidt said. “I am very excited to work with an up-and-coming head coach and program under Ryan Ashburn and am just extremely thankful for this opportunity.”
While at BSC, Schmidt led Steven LaMay to a share of the 2017 Southern Athletic Association individual title. Played at Maumelle Country Club in Arkansas, LeMay shot +2 overall and tied the nation’s No. 3 Division III ranked golfer for the conference title.
Just this past year, Schmidt guided Emma Phillips to Honorable Mention All-America accolades. Phillips was a WGCA All-Region selection and was a member of the SAA Academic Honor Roll. Phillips finished Top 15 in all five tournaments she competed in last season.
Schmidt also led his student-athletes to tremendous success in the classroom as he had 11 players earn Academic All-American status in his four year as head coach.
“We are beyond excited to have Richard as our new assistant,” Ashburn said. “His prior experience as a head coach brings an added level of expertise which will help bring our program to the next level.”
A native of Houston, Texas, Schmidt played golf at Jacksonville State under head coach James Hobbs. He graduated in 1999 with a degree in criminal justice.
Schmidt and his wife, Alison, reside in Birmingham with their son Griff and daughter Reese.
