UAB women’s basketball head coach Randy Norton has announced Blazer alum Trista Magee Whitman as assistant coach in July 2024. Whitman transferred to UAB after spending one season at Alabama and played for the Blazers from 2017-2020.

Whitman has spent the last four years as a head coach at the high school level. The past two years she was the head coach at Petal High School, which was a 7A classification school. She also was the head coach at Forrest County Agricultural High School and Stringer Attendance Center for one year.

The Ellisville, Mississippi native began her college career at Alabama for the 2016-17 season. Whitman appeared in 19 games and had a season-best nine points, all coming from the three-point range. After her one year at Alabama, she transferred to UAB and had an outstanding three seasons with the Blazers.

For the 2017-18 season with UAB, Whitman saw action in 21 games and helped the Blazers to a program winning year. She helped guide the team to 27 overall wins and 13 wins in C-USA play, helped set the program record at the time for 3-point field goal percentage (37.6) and made 3-point field goals (267), all program records. Whitman also helped win the program’s first-ever C-USA Regular Season Championship.

In Whitman’s second season with the Blazers (2018-19), she appeared in 27 games and ranked fourth on the team in rebounds (4.9 per game). For the season she helped guide UAB to setting the program record for 3-pointers in a season (291), 3-point field goals attempted (811), third best field goal percentage from the long range (35.9) and fifth best free throw percentage (72.0).

In Whitman’s 2019-20 senior season she was one of only four players to start in all 31 games. She averaged 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while recording 67 assists, 20 steals and 10 blocks. Whitman scored in double figures 13 times, with a career-high 18 points in her final game in Bartow Arena. She was second on the team in made threes (53), third in assists (67), third in rebounds (120) and third in steals (20). Whitman helped set another record for 3-point field goal percentage (38.1) in a single season.

For Whitman’s career as a Blazer, she recorded 463 points, 299 rebounds,109 assists and 41 steals. Academically, she was named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll all three seasons and was named CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2019-20.
