UAB Football Head Coach Bryant Vincent named Darin Hinshaw as the Blazers’ new Offensive Coordinator on July 29, 2022.
Hinshaw joins UAB after spending last season as an analyst at his alma mater, the University of Central Florida, where he helped the Knights to a 9-4 overall record and a victory over Florida in Union Home Mortgage Gasprialla Bowl. Before joining UCF, Hinshaw spent five seasons at the University of Kentucky (2016-20), three seasons at the University of Cincinnati (2013-15) and three seasons at the University of Tennessee (2010-12).
During his time at Kentucky, he served as Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. Kentucky was 37-26 overall during Hinshaw’s time in Lexington, highlighted by a 10-3 record in 2018 capped by a 27-24 VRBO Citrus Bowl victory over Penn State.
One of Hinshaw’s most notable accomplishments from Kentucky was his player devolvement of Lynn Bowden Jr. where he moved him from wide receiver to quarterback during the 2019 season. Bowden Jr. went on to earn the First Team All-America and All-SEC honors and won the Paul Hornung Award for the nation’s most versatile athlete. He also broke school records for rushing, yards per carry and rushing touchdowns.
From 2013 to 2015, Hinshaw served as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Cincinnati where the Bearcats led the AAC in total offense and rushing. In 2015, Cincinnati ranked sixth nationally in total offense with an average of 537.8 yards per game and broke the school record for total yards of offense (6,992).
Cincinnati was 25-14 overall in Hinshaw’s three years and had a pair of 9-win seasons while he was there.
At Tennessee, Hinshaw worked with quarterbacks and receivers and served as the recruiting coordinator in 2012. Amid his time as recruiting coordinator, Hinshaw was ranked one of the top 10 recruiters by Rivals.com.
Additionally, Hinshaw worked his way up the ranks with stops at Memphis (2007-10), Georgia Southern (2006), Middle Tennessee (2001-05) and UCF (1999-01).
The Punta Gorda, Florida native played quarterback at UCF from 1991-94 and ranks third all-time in school history for passing yards (9,000) and is tied for second in passing touchdowns (82). He received his Bachelor of Science degree in business and finance, and later went on to graduate from UCF with an MBA in 1996.
Hinshaw was an undrafted free agent in 1995 and signed with the Cleveland Browns, then had multiple brief stints with the Canadian Football League. He played two seasons with the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League and had stints with the Nashville Kats in the AFL and the Granite State Warriors in the Eastern Football League.
Hinshaw had four children Sydney, Hayley, Carley and Darin Jr.
