Head Coach Trent Dilfer named Senior Analyst Danny Mitchell as the new Run Game Coordinator and Running Backs Coach for the UAB football program on January 29, 2025.
Mitchell enters his third season with the Blazers in 2025 and his first in his new role leading the running backs unit. He served the previous two years as the Senior Offensive Analyst and helped UAB establish a school record for yards per game (450.0) in 2023.
Mitchell, who is a 2023 European Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, has extensive and unique coaching credentials, which includes serving as the Offensive Coordinator for the Vienna Vikings of the European League of Football and winning the European Championship in their inaugural year as a franchise in 2022. For his efforts he was a nominee for the European League of Football Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to being the OC for Vienna, Mitchell was the Head Coach and Athletic Director at Christian Unified High School in San Diego, Calif. During his time there, Mitchell successfully implemented a strategic plan to allow his student-athletes to safely compete throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and it resulted in Christian’s football program competing for the league championship within his first year.
Mitchell was the Offensive Coordinator at The Bishop’s School before Christian Unified. While with The Bishop’s School, his team accomplished three undefeated regular seasons, four consecutive conference championships, two San Diego Section CIF Championship appearances, a Southern California Regional Championship, and a California State Championship appearance. Under his guidance the team achieved the No. 1 offense in San Diego history, while also holding the No. 1 offense in school history three times during his tenure. In Mitchell’s last season, the Knights averaged 56.1ppg, and junior quarterback Tyler Buchner (Notre Dame/Alabama), led the entire nation in total yardage including breaking the single game yardage record.
Mitchell coached internationally before joining The Bishop’s School and was the Head Coach for the Osnabruck Tigers in Germany and then the Offensive Coordinator and Associate Head Coach for the Carlstad Crusaders in Sweden, leading both organizations to undefeated seasons and National Championships.
Mitchell began his coaching career in 2012 at Menlo College in Atherton, California, and then joined his Alma Mater of Willamette University in 2013 as the running backs coach. He also had stops at the University of San Diego in 2015 working with receivers and was a graduate assistant at San Jose State in the spring of 2016. Mitchell played quarterback at Willamette from 2009-12 and was also a collegiate baseball player at San Diego Christian from 2007-08.
Following his collegiate career, Mitchell played professional football in Europe for the Carlstad Crusaders Division 1 team where he earned Offensive Player of the Year.
This past summer, Mitchell was one of 25 coaches that formed the inaugural class of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers National Coaching Academy in which he spent two full weeks participating in meetings and coaching with Tampa Bay’s staff.
Mitchell is married to his wife Samantha.
