New Flagship Radio Station For UAB Athletics
July 24, 2003
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB Athletics will have a new 100,000-watt flagship radio station when the 2003 football season opens in just over a month, according to an announcement Thursday by Blazer Director of Athletics Watson Brown.
WYDE 101.1 FM "The Source" will carry UAB football and men's basketball games, as well as coaches' shows broadcast by the Blazer Sports Network. The first "Inside the Dragon's Den with Watson Brown" coach's show will air Wednesday, Aug. 20 on 101.1 FM.
101.1 "The Source" went on the air in July of 2002, with a locally-based, News Talk format backed with a 100,000-watt signal. The signal reaches throughout North Central Alabama, roughly from the Mississippi border to the West, the Georgia border on the East, north to beyond the Tennessee line, to south of Clanton in Shelby County.
"We are extremely excited to have 101.1 FM coming on board and we look forward to this relationship," said Brown, who became Athletics Director at UAB last fall. "I have been impressed with the commitment of those associated with 101.1 and with the increased signal that the station provides, our coverage area will expand tremendously."
WYDE-FM 101.1 "The Source" is owned by the Crawford Broadcasting Company, which also operates WDJC-FM at 93.7 FM; WDJC-AM at 850AM, and simulcasts the WYDE-FM signal at 1260AM.
""We are very excited at 101.1 FM "The Source" to be partnering with UAB Athletics for the coming season," said Steve Armstrong, General Manager at 101.1 FM. "UAB has a rich history of outstanding athletics and is an organization for which Birmingham and the State of Alabama can be very proud. Our commitment to bring the very best in local programming is furthered by this new and outstanding relationship."
