June 21, 2002
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Herman Frazier, Director of Athletics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham since August of 2000, has resigned his position.
Frazier was announced on Friday as the new Athletics Director for the University of Hawaii's Manoa Campus.
Frazier, a 1976 Olympic gold and bronze medallist, joined the UAB program 22 months ago after serving as the senior associate athletic director at Arizona State University. In his 23-year career at ASU he moved from graduate assistant with the track program to the senior associate athletic director for business and operations, a position he held from 1996 to August 2000.
Frazier presently serves as one of three vice-presidents of the U.S. Olympic Committee, having been elected to that post in 1996.
A Philadelphia native, Frazier graduated from Arizona State University at Tempe where he was captain of the 1977 ASU National Championship Track Team.
Frazier's appointment at Hawaii is effective August 1, 2002.
UAB Interim President Malcolm Portera indicated the search for a successor to Frazier will begin immediately. "We will begin the process immediately," said Portera. "We will hire the very best individual who will fit with our program."
