Two UAB Student-Athletes Earn C-USA Postgraduate Scholarships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB student-athletes Katja Lerew (Wichita Falls, Texas/women's soccer) and Igor Nikolic (Zemun, Serbia/men's basketball) each were awarded Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarships today by the league office in Chicago.
The league annually presents six $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the Faculty Athletics Representatives at the conference's annual Spring Meetings.
Along with Lerew and Nikolic, the other four selections included Joel Brusewitz (men's cross country, Marquette), Anna Monhartova (women's tennis/Tulane), Katherine Mowat (women's golf/Louisville) and Goran Carlos Yabar (men's soccer/Louisville).
Lerew, an exercise science major with a 3.87 GPA, earned the team's 2000 MVP award and ranks fourth on the all-time list in matches played and started. She was also a three-time C-USA Academic Medal winner and the UAB and Alabama candidate for the 2000 Rhodes Scholarship. A member of three national honor societies, she plans to get a master's degree in physical therapy and pursue rehabilitative research.
Nikolic, an electrical and computer engineering major with a 3.97 GPA, was a three-time C-USA Academic Medal winner and an All-District CoSIDA Academic honoree in 2001. He was named the 1999-00 Outstanding Undergraduate Student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. He is currently working on a master's degree in the same field.
