Jan. 9, 2003
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- E.J. Brophy, a former all-conference catcher for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been named Assistant Director of Athletic Development at UAB, according to an announcement by Blazer Director of Athletics Watson Brown.
Brophy, who will begin his new position January 13, will assist Senior Associate Athletics Director Brian Mackin in the area of fundraising for UAB Athletics. Brophy will replace Robert Brooks, who resigned his position at UAB in November to become an Assistant Athletics Director at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
"E.J. will be working closely with me as we seek to identify and enlist alumni participation, as well as broaden our business contacts within the Birmingham community," said Mackin.
Brophy, a native of Montgomery, lettered four years (1989-92) and earned first-team Great Midwest Conference honors as a senior in 1992, a year after he was tabbed to the second-team All-Sun Belt Conference squad. He was a member of UAB's NCAA Tournament team in 1991 and was a standout on the Great Midwest Conference champion squad in 1992 as the Blazers finished with a 43-18 record.
Since 1998, Brophy has served as head baseball coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Ala. Prior to his tenure at Wallace, he was assistant baseball coach at the University of Montevallo (1997-98) and Samford University (1995-1996).
"We are excited to have E.J. joining our program," said Brown. "He has a passion for UAB and we feel he will be a good fit for this position and our program. Raising funds is very important to our program right now and we think E.J. can help us in our efforts."
Following his playing career at UAB as a four-year starter, Brophy was selected in the 37th round of the professional baseball draft and spent three years in the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system. He reached the Phillies' AAA level team in 1995.
Brophy earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from UAB in 1995 and his Masters from UAB in physical education in 1998.
