YOUNGSVILLE, La. - The No. 2 seed UAB beach volleyball team fell to No. 1 seed and nationally ranked Florida Atlantic, 3-2, at the Conference USA Championships at Sugar Beach on Saturday. The loss eliminated the Blazers one win shy of the championship match.
The defeat capped the best season in program history, as UAB finished with a program-record 26 wins, including a 16-match winning streak.
"I am so proud of this team and the history we made as a program," head coach Delaney Rose said. "Our success goes far beyond the records broken. It's measured by the growth of each player, and now everyone knows who UAB beach is."
UAB earned victories on Courts 1 and 3, while Florida Atlantic secured wins on Courts 2, 4 and 5. Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant won their Court 1 match over Denisse Morgenstern and Shantel Starling, 25-23, 21-11. The victory marked the duo's 29th of the season, setting program records for single-season individual wins and wins as a pair. Haas and Stant finished the tournament with a 3-1 record and were named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Pairs Team.
UAB also earned a win on Court 3, where Olivia Chychrun and Ava Grace Knott defeated Klaire VanDeusen and Mia Scanlon, 22-20, 22-20. Chychrun and Knott recorded their 27th win of the season, which ranks second in program history for single-season victories.
Haas, Stant and Chychrun conclude their careers as three of the most decorated players in program history. Haas holds program records for single-season wins (29), career wins (96), and wins on Court 1 in both a season (29) and a career (90). Stant ranks second in program history in career wins (83), single-season wins (29) and wins as a duo (29). Chychrun finished her career with 74 victories, ranking third in program history, and holds the record for career wins on Court 3 with 27.
"The seniors were our rock this year," Rose said. "They set the mission and kept everyone on the path, even through adversity. Their legacy will always be remembered for the culture they built and how they led from the front."
