UAB Finishes 1-2 on Day One of the FSU Unconquered Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The UAB beach volleyball team opened the season Friday at the FSU Unconquered Invitational. The Blazers finished the day with a 1-2 record, defeating Southeastern Louisiana 3-2 and falling to No. 8 Florida State 5-0 and No. 18 Georgia State 3-2.
In the morning match against the host Seminoles (3-0), the Court 1 duo of Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant pushed their opponents to the limit, taking the match to a third set. After dropping the first set to Alexis Durish and Audrey Rothman 21-12, Haas and Stant bounced back in the second, winning 22-20 before falling in the final set 15-12.
The Blazers responded in the second match of the day against Southeastern Louisiana, earning a 3-2 victory. Haas and Stant were again standouts, winning their Court 1 match, 2-0 over Gabriela Hrubanova and Maggie Pavia. UAB also saw strong performances on Court 4, where Lauren Cairo and Claudia Stockard swept Elizabeth Hardouin and Geneveive Schubert 2-0. The match was clinched on Court 5 with another 2-0 sweep by Olivia Chychrun and Ava Grace Knott. The victory marked Chychrun's 48th career win, while Knott earned the first win of her UAB career.
In the final match of the day, the Blazers dropped a competitive 3-2 decision to No. 18 Georgia State (2-1). Haas and Stant notched their second Court 1 win of the day with a 2-0 victory over Savannah Ebarb and Bella Troncale. Cairo and Stockard also picked up a second win of the day on Court 4. With the two victories Friday, Haas now has 69 career victories and sits two victories away from becoming UAB's all-time wins leader.
The Blazers return to action on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. against Cal State Bakersfield (0-2) and at 1 p.m. against North Alabama (2-1).
