WEEK 1 TAKEAWAYS:
- As suspected, there is a different edge to this year's camp with shorter but higher intensity practices. With virtually every starting position up for grabs, the focus and energy has been noticeable, and the depth of talent has been on full display throughout week one.
- Under a brand-new defensive staff, the Blazers look to regain momentum on that side of the ball and have brought a renewed sense of swagger to camp. Defensive end Ezra Odinjor looks poised for a breakout season, while the linebacker rotation is stacked with veteran players who were added through the portal (Eli Ennis, Devin Hightower and Calvin Pitcher), along with sophomore Tylan McNichols who had a solid freshman season and senior Eddy Toussom who is seizing his opportunity this year. The secondary has created multiple turnovers and depth was addressed as there are about 12-14 players rotating and jockeying for starting positions, which has created an immense amount of competition.
- QB1 Jalen Kitna looks the part in leading UAB to a strong season, and redshirt sophomore Ryder Burton (BYU/West Virigina transfer) has also garnered attention with his strong play. A three-headed attack in the backfield seems cohesive with Solomon Beebe, Jevon Jackson and Isaiah Jacobs all looking impressive, while Ohio State/Iowa wide receiver transfer Kaleb Brown looks to be the real deal after missing all of spring ball. The wideouts boast a tremendous amount of depth through returners, portal additions, as well as freshman addition Jaylen Elder who shown flashes thus far.
