UAB Beach Splits on Final Day of ASU/GCU Invitational

PHOENIX – The UAB beach volleyball team split on the final day of the ASU/GCU Invitational on Saturday at Grand Canyon University.
The Blazers (11-9) opened the day with a 4-1 victory over Conference USA opponent UTEP, then suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 13 Grand Canyon.
Against the Miners, every match went three sets with UAB winning four of the five. In the first flight, both courts two and four lost the first set, but rallied to win the final two. Isabel Day and Claudia Stockard won the third set 15-10 on Court 2, while Klea Sirois and Lauren Cairo won 15-3 on Court 4.
The second flight saw UAB's Court 1 pair of Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant drop the first set 17-21, but then won the final two 21-16, 15-11. Court 5 was also victorious as Ashely Torsone and Addison Atkins rallied to win 18-21, 21-15, 16-14. Torsone and Atkins were down 14-11 in the final set but stormed back with five straight points to win the match.
Against GCU, the Lopes raced out to a 2-0 lead with victories on courts two and four. Court 2 was closely contested throughout with Day and Stockard winning the first set, but GCU won the second and was then victorious 15-12 in the third.
UAB's lone point came from Court 1 with Haas and Stant winning in straight sets, 21-15, 21-18. UAB's top pair went 3-1 this weekend which included a pair of ranked wins, and they now have a team-best overall record of 15-5 this season.
The Blazers head to Myrtle Beach next weekend for the Chanticleer Challenge where they face College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Lynchburg and UNC Wilmington.
