Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime to Tulsa

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (15-12, 6-9 AAC) fell 72-68 in overtime against Tulsa (14-13, 8-7 AAC) at Bartow Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Maddie Walsh led the Blazers on senior day with 20 points, while Eleecia Carter registered 13 points. Jade Weathersby recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
UAB shot 55 percent in the first and held the Golden Hurricanes 12 percent. The Green and Gold had a 14-6 lead with 4:06 left and then went on a 9-0 run to close out the frame with a 16-point lead at 23-7. The Blazers were 10-of-18 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
In the second, UAB got off to a slow start and did not score until the 3:12 mark making the score 24-12. With the Blazers first points in the frame, they went on a 7-0 run to have an 18-point lead (30-12). Tulsa scored the next four points before Tracey Bershers made a three at the buzzer to make the game 33-16 at halftime.
Walsh made a three to open the third to give UAB its biggest lead at 20 (36-16). The Golden Hurricanes then went on a 15-3 run to get within eight points of the Blazers at 39-31. With two made free throws from Weathersby and a 3-pointer from Walsh UAB had a 44-33 lead, but Tulsa made a three to close the quarter 44-36. The Green and Gold had eight turnovers in the frame which allowed the Gold Hurricanes to score 10 points of them.
Tulsa went on a 9-0 run to get within one at 48-47 with 5:35 remaining. The Blazers then went on a 7-0 run to get back in front by eight. The Golden Hurricanes used an 8-0 run to have their first lead of the game at 58-57. Carter made a three with 24 seconds left to give UAB back the lead, but Tulsa made a layup with nine seconds left to tie the game 60-60 and sent the game into overtime.
Overtime saw two lead changes and two tied scores. The score was tied for the second time in the frame at 66-66 after Carter made two free throws. Tulsa made a three before Sara Bershers made two free throws allow the Blazers to trail by one (69-68). UAB wasn't able to score and had to foul Tulsa, who ultimately won by four points.

The Blazers travel to face Rice on Tuesday, February 25. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
