BIRMINGHAM – Senior running back Isaiah Jacobs has been named a candidate for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award.
Now in its eighth year, the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award is presented annually to the FBS college football player who has demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
The award honors the type of exemplary character and commitment to community, family and teammates demonstrated by Jason Witten, the 2012 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year and one of the most prominent role models in the game.
Jacobs is one of 52 FBS players named to the watch list, and only one of two from the American Athletic Conference.
Jacobs is in his second year with the Blazers and is a two-time captain. His path to UAB was through a road less traveled, which has made him the man he is today.
The brother of NFL star Josh Jacobs, the two grew up homeless in Tulsa, Okla., but did not let that hinder their performance in the classroom or on the football field. Jacobs received multiple offers out of high school and chose Maryland, where he spent the first two years of his career before one year at Independence Community College.
In his first season at UAB last year, his teammates immediately voted him as a team captain, but more adversity struck when he tore his ACL five games into the season.
Jacobs did not let that hinder his passion of helping others, as he has volunteered nearly 50 hours in the community serving more than 10 different organizations because as he states, giving back is a passion of his. Additionally, Jacobs carries an institutional GPA of 3.48.
Through three games this year, Jacobs has 34 carries for 150 yards and has added seven catches for 33 yards. Jacobs will be back in action on Saturday as the Blazers host Navy at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
Twenty semifinalists will be announced on October 22. Three finalists will be named for the award on Monday, December 16. The winner will be announced at the award ceremony at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on February 12, 2025.
Last year, Mike Hollins of Virginia won the seventh annual award. The first six Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year awards were presented to Shaquem Griffin of UCF in 2017, D'Cota Dixon of Wisconsin in 2018, Trey Smith of Tennessee in 2019, Sam Ehlinger of Texas in 2020, Joshua Paschal of Kentucky in 2021 and Deslin Alexandre of Pittsburgh in 2022.
