BIRMINGHAM – UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram announced the promotion of Matt Coomer to head coach of the UAB men's tennis program on Thursday. Coomer was the program's assistant coach during the 2024 season, helping the Blazers to a 12-11 record.
"Matt has great relationships with our players and is ready to guide our men's program to great success in the AAC." Ingram said, "We are excited to have him join our group of outstanding head coaches."
Coomer previously served as the head coach for the Indiana Tech men's and women's tennis programs. Prior to his time with the Warriors, Coomer spent time as the head coach at IU Southeast and at Centenary College.
From 2011-15, he served as an assistant coach at Louisville for both the women's (2011-13) and men's (2013-15) programs. Coomer coached the ITA national runner-up doubles team of Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine in 2013.
He was the No. 1 Singles player at IU Southeast, where he graduated in 2013 and was a KIAC All-Conference performer three times, including earning the league's Player of the Year honors in 2011.
"I want to thank Mark Ingram and Dan Carlson for the opportunity to lead this great program. I am looking forward to the challenge of pushing UAB Tennis to new heights, and to competing in the AAC."
