BIRMINGHAM – Sophomore Jonah Delange has been named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is annually presented to the nation's top placekicker by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
Delange is one of 20 semifinalists on the list and the only kicker from the American Athletic Conference represented.
Semifinalists will be voted on by a panel of FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced on
November 26 and honored at the 33rd annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Banquet on December 9 in Palm Beach County. The same panel then selects the winner, who will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12.
Delange is having a record-setting year for the Blazers and enters this Saturday's game having made 19-of-20 field goals and all 24 of his point after attempts.
Delange has the third highest field goal percentage (.950) of any kicker in the nation with a minimum of 10 attempts and ranks third nationally in field goals made per game (1.90). Additionally, his 19 field goals made are the fifth most in the country.
The Mobile native is currently tied for second for single season field goals made at UAB and needs four more to break the school record which is currently held by Swayze Waters with 22 in 2007.
This is Delange's first year as the placekicker for UAB after handling kickoff duties as a true freshman in 2023.
The Blazers are set to take on Rice this Saturday at Protective Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
