BIRMINGHAM – Jermaine Brown Jr. continues to add to his preseason accolades as he was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List on Wednesday, which is annually presented to the nation's top running back.
Brown Jr. is one of 75 running backs nationwide named to the watch list and just one of three from the American Athletic Conference. This is Brown's third national preseason watch list, along with being named to the Maxwell Award (college POY) and Hornung Award (most versatile player). Brown is also a preseason First Team All-AAC selection by Pro Football Focus, Phil Steele and Athlon Sports.
The fifth-year senior has 2,275 career rushing yards, 18 career rushing touchdowns and eight career 100-yard rushing games. He is coming off a season in which he almost ran for 1,000 yards alongside the nation's leading rusher DeWayne McBride, who was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker a year ago.
Brown ranks eighth in career rushing yards at UAB and aims to move up the list this year and become just the third player in school history to rush for 3,000 career yards (Spencer Brown and DeWayne McBride being the other two). His 18 career rushing touchdowns is currently tied for seventh as well.
Brown Jr. is coming off his best season in 2022 where he had 948 rushing yards, eight touchdowns and 1,543 all-purpose yards.
The Blazers are just 22 days away from opening the 2023 season at home against North Carolina A&T. Kickoff at Protective Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
