BIRMINGHAM – A part of UAB Football's core values of Serve. Grow. Launch. is to serve as many people and organizations in the city of Birmingham as possible. That is how the first-year partnership with Smile-A-Mile came about as UAB's new black uniforms will be dedicated to this organization which helps provide hope for childhood cancer.
Black Jersey Schedule:
Sept. 16 – Louisiana
Oct. 21 – Memphis
About Smile-A-Mile:
Smile-A-Mile's mission is to provide hope, healing of the spirit and love for the whole family during the childhood cancer journey. Through year-round meaningful and educational programming, Smile-A-Mile helps those in Alabama who are affected by childhood cancer thrive during treatment and the years beyond.
Smile-A-Mile started more than 35 years ago with just a single summer camp session for children in Alabama with cancer. Over the years, Smile-A-Mile has grown to be a year-round program that serves children and their families from diagnosis and through the years beyond treatment. SAM's purpose is to provide hope for these families through their cancer journey.
Smile-A-Mile is a longtime partner of Children's of Alabama. Many of the wonderful Hematology/Oncology medical staff volunteer time at our programming to provide care for the pediatric participants. Smile-A-Mile provides funding each year for a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow in training with the UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. This funding is offered exclusively for the training of Post-Graduate Fellows in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
The black Smile-A-Mile uniforms will have the names of patients on the back of the jerseys and will be given to the patients at the end of the season.
"We are grateful to the UAB football team for honoring our Smile-A-Mile heroes. The children honored on the backs of these unique jerseys battle cancer daily and represent the 1500 families we serve across Alabama," said Kellie Reece, Smile-A-Mile COO.
UAB will debut the jerseys against Louisiana on Sept. 16, and will wear them again in its highly anticipated rivalry game against Memphis on Oct. 21 when the Battle for the Bones trophy is renewed at Protective Stadium.
Although this is the first year wearing jerseys to honor Smile-A-Mile, UAB Athletics and its student-athletes have served many hours volunteering at SAM throughout the years, which is located just blocks away from campus across from Regions Field.
UAB is just three weeks away from opening the season on Aug. 31 at Protective Stadium against North Carolina A&T. Season and single game tickets are on sale by clicking here, while a special 2 for $23 ticket offer for the first game only is available here.
