6/27/2023 4:12:00 PM | General, Athletic Performance
BIRMINGHAM – On Tuesday at Birmingham's City Council Meeting, Mayor Randall L. Woodfin proclaimed that this Saturday, July 1, 2023, will be UAB Day when the Blazers officially join the American Athletic Conference.
Mayor Woodfin presented members of the UAB Department of Athletics and spirit squad with an official Proclamation at Tuesday's meeting to signify the importance of this monumental day in the history of UAB Athletics.
As part of UAB Day on Saturday, the city of Birmingham will light up Green and Gold in support of UAB's move to the AAC. Buildings and significant landmarks in the city that will turn green on Saturday night include:
Protective Stadium, City Walk and ALDOT Highways, City Hall, Sloss Furnace, Regions Harbert Plaza, Regions Field, UAB's Campus and UAB's Athletics facilities, amongst others.
The Blazers, who were charter members of Conference USA dating back to 1995, have been one of the most competitive teams in the league for the past three decades and their success has propelled UAB into the American Athletic Conference.
UAB's recent success, which includes winning 50 games in football since 2017 (most in CUSA), winning 78 games in men's basketball since 2020 (fifth most nationally) and winning the 2017-18 regular season championship in women's basketball, along with facility upgrades to almost every venue, has launched UAB Athletics into an unprecedented era on the Southside.
Fans can help support UAB's move to The American by donating $71.23 to the Blazer Scholarship Fund this week. Your investment will help UAB Athletics and its student-athletes continue to compete for championships at the highest level, graduate with honors and make a difference in the community.
