BIRMINGHAM – After a record-setting first year for the UAB beach volleyball team, Jasmine Haas has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, league officials announced on Friday.
A native of Cincinnati, Haas arrived in Birmingham and immediately made an impact playing at the top of UAB's lineup. The 5-foot-4 defender played exclusively on the top two courts with a record of 14-11 on Court 1 and 6-3 on Court 2 for an overall record of 20-14.
The 20 wins were a UAB freshman record and she became just the fifth player in school history to win 20 matches in a single season.
"Jasmine came in and made an immediate impact with her work ethic and attitude" head coach Terri Del Conte said. "Her demeanor is beyond her years and I can't wait to witness how much she elevates over the next three years."
Haas stepped up against some of the nation's top competition by registering wins over nationally-ranked opponents South Carolina, Pepperdine, FIU and Tulane (twice).
She was also a catalyst for UAB defeating No. 12 FIU in the Conference USA Tournament and advancing to the C-USA semifinals for the first time in program history. For her efforts, she was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Team.
Haas is sharing Freshman of the Year honors with Ashleigh Adams of Florida Atlantic. Haas was also named First Team All-Conference USA and earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
Led by Haas, the Blazers won a program record 18 matches and put together the best season in program history. UAB is currently receiving votes in the AVCA Top 20.
The Blazers return seven of their top 10 players in 2024 and add a freshman class of six players. For more information on the Blazers, be sure to follow @UAB_BVB on Twitter and Instagram.
