DENTON – UAB Track & Field entered day three of the 2023 C-USA Track and Field Championships competing in nearly every event on schedule. With a delayed start due to inclement weather, the Blazers kept in stride. Four athletes qualified in their preliminary rounds and will compete on Sunday for the finals.
"The ladies had a good day today. We had lots of oportunities to make finals and those athletes came out, did their job and qualified. Sangie did great to grab a spot in tomorrows 1500m final. Both Mak and Kat both ran good hurdle races to qualify for their finals," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "Our other hurdlers, Taylor, Synai and Laney ran PR's or seasonal bests to finish their season. Gina ran a smart 800m to qualify and Ali raced a season's best too. Kyra scored some good team points in the 3000m steeplechase to score as a freshman and Britney ran a seasons best. Shauntia and Averie jumped really well and came close to finals, but just missed out. We're proud of the girls today. We have lots of chances for points tomorrow in the finals, Triple jump, High jump, relays and 5k."
The Blazers began the day in field events, where Tia Espinoza and Zoewinkenwerder represented UAB in discus. Winkenwerder would finish with a PR throw of 36.07m. In jumps, Shauntia Landrum and Averie Foster went on to have impressive showings in long jump, with Landrum jumping a season best 5.82m. Foster then finished with a PR performance of 5.71m
In the women's 1500m, Sangie Lincoln-Velez qualified in prelims, placing ninth and solidifying her spot in the finals. Kat Duren and Makiyah Sills would also qualify in the 100m hurdles, with Duren placing first in her heat.
For middle distance, Regina Harris finished third in her heat with a top-eight performance in the 800, qualifying her for the final. Kyra Hayes would also finish with a top-eight performance for the Blazers with a PR time of 11.17.13 in the 3000m steeplechase.
The Blazers are tied at sixth place after Saturday's events concluding day three. Day four features the finals for the 100m hurdles, 800m and 1500m. UAB will also round out the day in triple jump, pole vault, javelin and additional events on the docket. Sunday's events are set to begin at 10 AM.
