BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track and Field concludes the first day of the UAB Spring Invite with numerous personal bests to add to the list.
"We opened up our home meet with some very good performances, and more importantly, great event wins, and top finishes," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "Not every meet has to feel like the Olympics. Sometimes you need to work on certain aspects of your events and build confidence. Our girls really did that today on day one. We hope to come out and do similar things tomorrow in all of our events."
The Blazers began the day with an early personal best from Tia Espinoza who threw a 33.26m in the hammer throw. She finished with a top-eight performance to spark the competitive edge for UAB. Following Espinoza's performance in hammer throw Mya McDanal collected the first event win of the day in the javelin while setting a PR of 42.29m.
In jumps, the Blazers continued to have a good showing, with four top ten finishes in the long jump, including a second-place finish for Shauntia Landrum and a fourth-place finish for Laney Kronz, who also had a personal best performance.
The personal bests continued to carry over to the track, where the distance crew started strong in the 1500m. Sangie Lincoln-Velez finished with a PR of 4:42.35 to place her fourth overall in the event. In the 5K, another personal best came from Anna Behmer, who placed top ten, while Lauren Charlton collected another event win for the Blazers.
At the conclusion of Friday's events, the Green and Gold scored 60 points, with Troy in second with 44 and Jacksonville State in third with 41.
